Today's word in Hawaiian is Wikiwiki (wee-kee-wee-kee) means to hurry us, very quick.

Food....for thought

I was looking at Sam's Club's web site http://www.samsclub.com/ and decided to make the store in Honolulu "my club" so I could see what we might be able to order prior to our arrival and make our food shopping a little quicker once we arrived. Some of the prices might be a "little" higher that we pay, at least here in Oklahoma...we will be able to get anything that is not perishable picked for us and available to pick up i.e. juice, water, cereal, soda etc. Then we will only have to pick up items such as milk (2% - $4.07), eggs (5 dozen for $8.75), hot dogs, hamburger, steak, fruits, veggies and whatever it is we decide we are going to eat. It also seemed they had a wide variety of floatation devices for the children between $16 and $22, I don't know what anyone is planning for this, but I think Amanda and I will buy there if we decide the girls need anything. Mom did suggest that one night (maybe Friday) we purchase items and allow the kids to make homemade pizza, they may or may not enjoy that...i think ours will...what do ya'll think?
Has anyone else looked at the menu for the Luau ? Here is the link http://www.polynesia.com//alii-luau/alii-luau-menu.html I also noticed there are some recipes on the web site for some of the foods we will be able to try, let me know if anybody tries to make any of them...don't know how much taro ya'll have but our crop is pretty limited...

Today's word in Hawaiian is Pupu (poo-poo) which means appetizer, snacks or finger foods.

In the last 100 years, or so...

I was looking at things that have been invented/discovered in the last 100 years...aside from the obvious things like Cassette Tapes, CD's, DVD's, computers, ect. I found a few others that were interesting, at least to me. There were a couple that were pertinent to some of our livings that happened a few years before Granny was born, Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company introduced the Model A in Detroit in 1903 which was the same year that an historic flight took place at Kitty Hawk.

Things that have been invented/discovered since 1907:

The Spork - 1907 (image above), Ford Model T - 1908, Aluminum Foil - 1910, the Bra - 1913, the Calculator - 1917, Band-Aids - 1920, Q-Tips - 1923, Kool Aid - 1927, Freon - 1928, Scotch Tape - 1930, Ball Point Pen and Nylon - 1938, Atomic Bomb - 1939, Disposable Diapers - 1950, Microwave and TV Remote - 1955, Communications Satellite - 1962, Waffle Sole Running Shoes - 1971, MRI - 1973, Prozac - 1987 and WI-FI Network -2002.
It is amazing to think of all the history that has happened since Granny was born, I mean just think, Granny was 21 when they invented sliced bread (1928).
Today's word is Imu (ee-moo) means underground oven...speaking of which Mom says the tickets for the PCC have been purchased for Granny's birthday party.

Coming up on 100 days out

We are now within a window of 100 days until we touchdown in Hawaii...is everyone excited ?

I was looking at events that took place in 1907 just wondering what the world was like when Granny was born, here are some of the interesting things that I found...

A Parisian chemistry student, Eugene Schueller, founded the company L'Oreal, by creating a dye to cover gray hair with natural looking colors in a permanent process.

The first cabs with taxi meters begin operating in London.

Us Congress raised their own salaries to $7500.

Finland is the 1st European country to give women the right to vote.

Oklahoma becomes 46th state.

Ruyard Kipling receives Nobel prize for literature.

The Abraham Mills' commission declares Abner Doubleday invented baseball.

For the 1st time a ball drops at Times Square to signal New Year

In June of 1907:

The automatic washer and dryer are introduced.

Norway restricts woman's voting rights.

EW Scripps founds the United Press.

Other things uncovered: Ziegfeld Follies opened in NY, 1st successful comic strip, Mr. Mutt (later to share billing with Jeff), runs in San Francisco Chronicle, a 22 nation peace conference is held at the Hague, New Zealand becomes Dominion, French warships bombard Casablanca, the British launch a new age in luxury liners with the Mauritania and finally Maria Montessori opens a school for children, apparently her teaching methods are still in use today.

Our word in Hawaiian today is Hana hou (hah-nah-HO) means To do again.

Other Activities

I think everyone is going to have the chance to get out and experience at least 1 thing that they would like to do in Hawaii. I know that Amanda and I are going to go see Pearl Harbor. Some other things that you may want to experience could be...:

Jet Skiing - Early mornings are the best time of day as the water is the smoothest. You may consider wearing goggles. Watercraft Connection http://a.domaindlx.com/jetskihawaii/ in Hale'iwa on the North Shore they rent for about $55 per half hour and you can ride them in the open ocean...every where else seems to rent between $35 - $80 but they only allow you to ride on a circular track. The other companies are Aloha Jet Skis http://www.barefoottours.com/1-MASTER/oahu/aloha_jetski.html , at Ke'ehi Lagoon, or Sea Breeze, at Maunalua Bay.

Kayaking - The two best places to kayak are Kane'ohe Bay http://static.flickr.com/43/118901118_460183247a_s.jpg and Kailua Bay http://www.kailuasailboards.com/ . Kane'ohe Bay has smoothest waters and is one that almost no one does. It is a trip to a sunken island of over 1000 acres that you can't see from shore. The central part of Kane'ohe Bay is a huge barrier-type reef, although much of the reef is covered by sand. You get in the water at He'eia State Park and paddle out just over a mile. The waters are almost always smooth, you paddle out over shallow coral and fish on the way out. As you approach the island a sudden sand beach will appear 2 to 3 feet below your kayak. The second ocean kayak trip is at Kailua Bay. You can kayak to Flat Island or one of the Moku-lua Islands off of Lanikai Beach. These destinations seem to be more popular with kayakers and the waters are not as smooth as Kane'ohe Bay. Kayak rental companies include Hawaiian Water sports, who will deliver the kayak to the beach for you, with half day rates from $39 for single or $49 for double. Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks it is about the same cost but you will have to transport the kayak to the beach yourself.

Ocean Tours - You might want to try Outrigger Catamaranhttp://gohawaii.about.com/od/oahuactivities/ss/outrigger_sail.htm. They have a 45-foot sailing cat. The 2.5 hour snorkel trips are $42. The sailing and sunset trips are $35 for 90 minutes, including a free open bar. Or you can take a 1 hour sail for $15 aboard the catamaran of Manu Kai. Maybe you would rather take an outrigger canoe ride off of Waikiki. Aloha Beach Services offers you a ride on two waves for $10, of course you can rent the canoe and paddlers for $250 per hour. There are also several companies that offer snorkeling cruises. It only depends on which side of the island you want to explore.

Maybe in future entries we can explore things like Parasailing, Scuba, Snuba, Skydiving, Snorkeling, Submarine, Water Skiing, Surfing, Whale Watching, Windsurfing, Night Snorkeling, Swimming with Dolphins, Swimming with Sharks, Hiking or Night Shipwreck Diving.

Today's word is Lani (lah-nee) means Sky or Heaven.
